Unconscious Biases: Addressing Stealth Barriers to Gender Diversity in Tech

This talk incorporates material prepared and presented by Dr. Catherine Ashcraft, Senior Research Scientist at the National Center for Women & Information Technology. While the talk discusses and is applicable to the intersectional effect of multiple biases, such as race, gender, ability, sexuality, and class, as a white queer trans woman speaker, I will be focusing on the biases I personally experience. We will spend some time defining the problem and its perniciousness, and how it manifests in the work environment. Then we will present different methods for dealing with it, specifically with regards to company culture and hiring practices, as well as my own learning from trying to apply these practices at my company.
